Was looking for effective ways to reduce IDC operation costs

Samsung SDS is located in Suwon, Gawcheon, Gumi, Daedug and etc. and operates its own IDC(Internet Data Center). The major operation costs are power usage, Internet and facility operation; and the main reason to operate its own IDC was to reduce these costs.

What did KINX do?

Suggested Metro Connect which is less expensive

Before using KINX service, Samsung SDS used transits to exchange traffic among ISPs, but Samsung SDS chose KINX Metro Connect service for a new method to exchange traffic.
KINX is the only local peering service provider in Korea; 42 members including major ISPs, SOs, CPs are peered at 562G backbone network at KINX IDCs. Allowing domestic ISPs, SOs and CPs to directly exchange Internet traffic without any charges, peering is much more cost-effective than using transits. 17% of the eyeballs in Korea (around 3 millions) uses the Internet through KINX.
Metro connect uses Metro Ethernet using a L3 switch to interconnect customer’s network with enterprise Internet dedicated lines. This makes KINX Metro Connect special since customer’s infra environment becomes optimized.

Effect

Network quality improvement and transit cost reduction

Saumsung SDS significantly reduced the number of hops that resulted in boosting up the speed, which means that local peering is more directly connected. In addition, cost of local peering is much more inexpensive than using transits.
