Introduction

01

Korea’s Largest Crowdfunding Platform for Creators

Tumblbug is a startup that was established back in 2011 and is currently the largest crowdfunding platform site in Korea. In 2015, it successfully attracted a total of KRW 1.7 billion in Series A investment from DCM, an investment firm based in Silicon Valley, Naver, which is headquartered Korea, and others.
On Tumblbug, anyone can be a creator and a sponsor. Creators can post information on their project consisting of their plans, descriptions, prototypes, etc. on Tumblbug and gather sponsors. Sponsors, on the other hand, provide a desired amount of funds through the “Support” function, and when the target amount is reached, they receive special privileges in the form of creative work. In 2016 alone, more than 100,000 sponsors provided about KRW 6.6 billion to 1,507 projects, thereby contributing to their successful completion. The ultimate vision of Tumblbug is to have creators generate profits, build communities and share diverse values through the platform.

Background

02

Tumblbug reviewed KINX’s AWS Direct Connect service while looking for dedicated line services in order to transfer their financial information to a cloud.

Due to our nature as a startup, we, Tumblbug, did not have enough staff to manage its infrastructure, and thus most of the service infrastructure had been built in the form of a cloud. Due to PG’s policy, only the funds provided by sponsors were processed using the physical server. However, considering the compatibility with other services on the cloud and the difficulty of managing servers following an office relocation, it was determined that it would be better to process the financial information on a cloud than on a physical server. So we started looking at how other startups were building their services that required high security, and we found out about AWS Direct Connect, AWS’s dedicated line service, and KINX, an AWS partner. After reviewing the AWS website and the AWS Direct Connect information page on KINX’s website, we inquired about the service, thinking that it would be an essential service for us. After reviewing the materials sent by KINX and receiving consulting, we naturally chose KINX AWS Direct Connect.

What did KINX do?

03

Architecture Configuration, Dedicated Line Connection, BGP Setting, etc. Based on the Security Policies

Because it was necessary to connect a dedicated line to PG, providing financial services related to the money raised via crowdfunding, there were many areas where we, Tumblbug, had to consult on with KINX and PG. Although the connection process was not easy, KINX’s sales representatives and engineers suggested a network architecture that took into consideration the security policies of our company and PG and also carefully went over the router or BGP settings with us, which proved to be very helpful in setting up the service.

Significantly Boosted Tumblbug’s Productivity by Facilitating Infrastructure Management

The greatest convenience arising from the migration of our physical servers to a cloud environment via AWS Direct Connect is that it has reduced the number of management points. When we had physical servers in-house, managing them became difficult and cumbersome due to frequent office relocations, and due to the shortages of the staff who could manage our infrastructure, it was not easy to make a rapid response when problems arose. But the introduction of AWS Direct Connect solved all these difficulties. Also, by setting up all our services on a cloud, we began utilizing the cloud (AWS) at a greater rate. This was because the infrastructure could be configured using various add-on services within AWS such as AWS Lambda and Dynamo DB, depending on the nature and needs of the service. Aside from this, it also enabled financial information processing through a private VPC, which helped ease the burden related to security.
