Background

02

Seeking Solutions to Quickly and Reliably Distribute Large Client Files and Patch Files

Due to graphic enhancements and high-definition cinematic videos incorporated into online games, client files began to exceed well over 10GB in size, and the company was faced with the challenge of reliably transferring such large file transfers to game users. Also, when there was a need for a large-scale patch work, the download speed became substantially reduced, with users accessing the site to download the patch files. This problem could not be solved by simply adding more servers, and thus the company was forced to seek an alternative solution.

03

Proposal of Fast and Reliable File Transfers at Reasonable Costs with the KINX CDN Game/File Download Service

In order to address the issue of high traffic cost and transmission quality problems associated with large file transfers, we proposed NCSoft CDN game/file download service.
The CDN game/file download service applies a hybrid download method consisting of peer-to-peer (P2P) download and HTTP (server) download. When the file is downloaded via the P2P method, the content is transferred between peers, and this helps reduce the load on the server as much as possible, thereby maximizing transmission efficiency. This in turn helps cut traffic costs as a result.
This is actually an essential service that meets the needs of game companies requiring transfers of large client files and patch files.

Achieving 50% Cost Savings While Ensuring Fast and Reliable Client File and Patch File Transfers

NCSoft was able to reliably transfer large files to game users through the KINX CDN download service and enjoy 50% cost savings compared to the previous method.
The reason the game developer was able to cut its costs in half is that our CDN download service applies a hybrid method combining P2P and HTTP. Content transfer occurs between users who are currently downloading through the P2P download method, which substantially reduces the amount of HTTP downloads for which charges incur based on traffic.
