Introduction

01

Subsidiary of Yellow Mobile Famous as “Dinosaur Venture”

Emotion became the talk of the town when it was acquired by Yellow Mobile, dubbed the “Dinosaur Venture,” in 2014. It is a digital web agency that has won the largest number of awards from WebAward, and its prominence in the industry has been attested by the large-scale projects it has worked on for major clients such as Sanyo and Universal Japan.

In 2010, it launched a mobile location-based dating app called, 1km, using KINX’s Internet Data Center (IDC) infrastructure, and it has grown into a global dating app since.

Finding the Perfect IDC for Global Launch of Its App Service

The 1km app developed by Emotion is a location-based dating app that allows users to chat with someone of the opposite sex present within a 1km radius of where they are currently at.

When the user updates their current location on the app updates, they can obtain information on other users nearby including their photographs and gatherings happening in the neighborhood. The information is delivered from the database in real time, resulting in frequent communication between the server and users.

In 2014, Emotion was looking for an IDC to advance into the overseas market with its 1km Global Version available in 10 languages including English, Chinese, Spanish and Thai. It is important to note that when launching a global app service, the freedom to choose international and domestic carriers enables for more effective operation and helps reduce the operating and management costs.

However, IDCs operated by large carriers often do not offer such freedom of choice, and this results in inefficiencies in operation and higher management costs. So Emotion began looking for an IDC that would help them avoid this problem.

What did KINX do?

KINX’s Carrier Neutral IDC Provides Freedom of Choice

For Emotion, which had been suffering from cost inefficiencies in relation to operation and management as it could not freely choose the carriers, we proposed that they provide the 1km app service via our IDC, which is connected to multiple line operators and offers a freedom of choice.

The optical terminals of major carriers are located in the same place within the IDCs of KINX, meaning that customers can freely choose the line they want to use. This allows customers to choose an ISP based on their carrier operation policy, relationship with the telecommunications service providers, rates, etc. and run their services more effectively.

Providing Diverse Carrier Options for Global App Services

There are a number of risks lurking behind the launch of a global app service. Of the many ways to increase the chance of success amidst various uncertainties, cost reduction one of the most important factors to consider. Through KINX’s carrier neutral IDC, Emotion was able to use diverse carrier lines and provide and operate its global app services at a lower cost than it would have if it had chosen an IDC operated by a large carrier, and as a result, the company gained great success with the 1km app being downloaded over a million times.
