Introduction

01

Kakao Going Beyond the Mobile Messenger Market to Emerge as Powerhouse in O2O Market

Kakaothe leading messenger service provider in Korea, acquired Daum, a major portal operator in 2014. In order to expand its business to the O2O market, Kakao acquired LOC&ALL, the developer of KimgisaNavi, in 2015, with the aim of creating synergy between the cab-hailing app and the surrogate driving app.

Background

02

Striving to Create a System That Can Handle the Peak Map Image Transmission Traffic During Holidays

The KimgisaApp, which was the precursor to KakaoNavi, became unstable when the amount of map images transmitted reached above a certain leave, causing the network equipment to be overloaded. The service became especially unstable when the GPS navigation system use peaked during the holidays such as the Lunar New Year’s Day and Chuseok. So Kakao was looking for a solution to this problem.

Proposal of IDC Service and CDN-Based Web/Mobile Data Transmission Service

As a solution, we proposed the IDC service, boasting an excellent network environment, and CDN-based web/mobile data transmission service. Our IDCs are directly interconnected with major ISPs in Korea and abroad, thereby enabling fast and reliable Internet services.

CDN web/mobile transmission is a caching service for storing the content from the origin server in an edge server to provide customer service at an accelerated rate. By using this service, the data stored on the edge server get transmitted, and this helps maintain the network quality and speed up the response time even in case of a sudden increase in traffic.

Overseas Business Expansion and Provision of Reliable Services Despite Heavy Traffic

Operating the services at our IDC, which boasts an excellent network environment, has made it possible for Kakao to provide their services more reliability and even expand their business to provide services to overseas users. Not only that, even during Chuseok and Lunar New Year’s Day characterized by a dramatic increase in traffic for map image transmission, Kakao became capable of providing the KimgisaNavi service without any problems through the CDN download service.
